Eileen McCarthy founded Midwest Avian Adoption & Rescue Services (MAARS) in 1999, which is the largest exotic bird placement and sanctuary facility in the country. She co-founded the Avian Welfare Coalition (AWC) and teaches avian care classes to volunteer staff, veterinary students, and veterinary technician students at local colleges and the University of Minnesota. She also offers behavior consultations to people who live with parrots. McCarthy has spoken at many national avian, humane, animal rights, and veterinary conferences, and is known for her educated, common-sense approach to issues impacting the mental and physical health, behavior, care, placement, and well-being of captive parrots.

Craig Brestrup worked for 20 years in the public sector mental health profession, first as a psychotherapist and later as CEO of mental health clinics in Texas and California. He has been Executive Director of five nonprofit organizations since 1980. In 1989, Brestrup received a Ph.D. in Medical Humanities, with a concentration in medical and environmental ethics and the philosophy of nature, from the Institute for the Medical Humanities at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. In 1994 he left mental health for animal protection.

Lynda Sugasa founded Safe Haven Wildlife Refuge Center. The primary purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and injured indigenous wildlife for release back to the wild. Lynda offers a variety of educational programs with emphasis on wildlife and conservation. Safe Haven is also a member of the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC), which promotes networking with other agencies both in the U.S. and throughout the world. Safe Haven's educational workshops for advanced skills are offered to members and volunteers and are taught by wildlife experts and veterinarians.
