Sanctuaries 2003: Focus on the Future

Building and Maintaining Stable and Effective Animal-Serving Organizations

April 27–29, 2003
Menucha Retreat & Conference Center
(at the Columbia River Gorge)
Corbett, Oregon

The Association of Sanctuaries (TAOS) has worked for animals and sanctuaries for eleven years. This third annual conference builds on the success of the last two, but with a difference this year. Whereas the others have emphasized a wide variety of topics, this year we will focus on fewer subject areas but in greater depth. This change responds to participant evaluations asking for more opportunity to talk with colleagues and presenters in an in-depth way about areas of paramount concern:

•

Fundraising, Media, P.R., Business Planning

Strengthening your organization for the long haul

•

Linkages: USDA, AZA, USFW, Vet Schools, Veterinarians, Sanctuaries, Other Animal Caretakers

Better relationships mean better care for the animals

•

Education

How? What? Why?: Innovative ways to teach compassion and contribute to necessary cultural change

•

Organizational Advancement

Who are we? Where are we going? How do we get there?

Focus on the Future will benefit anyone working with animals or who is considering doing so—sanctuaries and shelters, educators and advocates, managers, board members, and volunteers. Participants last year had this to say about the conference:

"I loved being with like-minded people. It refreshed me for another year of rescues."

"Gaining ideas and learning from other participants in an informal atmosphere were what I liked best."

"I liked the spirit of this group—mutual respect despite highly charged issues."

"Great networking opportunity!"

Program Notes

Sunday's all-day session on "…Marketing, Fundraising, Business Planning" is intended to provide the tools for participants to go home and lead their organizations in developing a one-year plan for starting (or reinforcing) their movement toward stability and solvency. It will look at all elements of an annual fundraising plan, building a community presence, developing useful relationships with the media, producing compelling public relations materials and newsletters, financial management, strategic planning, and more.

Monday starts with a two-hour session for all participants introducing them to concepts and practices for developing creative educational initiatives at their organizations. For those who want more in-depth engagement in this process, the session will continue for the full day. For those interested only in an introduction to the process, the remainder of the day will be spent in panel-guided, roundtable discussions of the salient issues facing sanctuaries today and how they can respond to them individually and collectively.

Tuesday offers sanctuaries the opportunity to hear from representatives of other organizations with whom they interface on animal-related matters and to define more productive ways of doing so.
